Lending a Helping Hand, From Boston to Staunton
Our mission at Staunton-Augusta-Waynesboro Habitat for Humanity is clear: building and restoring homes, lives, and communities through faith. This mission guides everything we do as we work to provide safe, affordable homes for families in our community. We recently had the privilege of hosting a dedicated group of student volunteers from Boston College who joined us in Staunton to help bring this mission to life. Their work cleaning and preparing a home for Bekky, a future Habitat homeowner, exemplifies how our community is able to come together to build hope and stability.
The Backbone of Our Organization
Our work is deeply rooted in community partnerships and sweat equity. Bekky, like all our homeowners, is not just receiving a home; she is actively involved in building it alongside volunteers and our skilled construction crew. This collaboration reflects one of our core principles that homeowners help build their own homes and pay an affordable mortgage, gaining strength, stability, and independence. Volunteers, whether local or visiting, play a vital role in this process by providing the extra hands needed to move projects forward, from cleaning and painting to more technical construction tasks.
Getting to Work
When the students arrived, the house was still very much a construction site—filled with sawdust, leftover materials, and unfinished spaces. With their efforts, the house is starting to look much more like a warm, welcoming home. Each brushstroke of paint and every cleared corner brings us closer to making that vision a reality for Bekky and families like hers.
Fostering Community with Service
The impact of our work extends beyond the physical home. It is about building community, fostering relationships, and creating a network of support. The warmth and generosity shared between Bekky, volunteers, contractors, and community members highlight the spirit that drives SAW Habitat. Every act of service creates a positive domino effect within our community, strengthening bonds and inspiring hope.
