Thank You For Your Support

Happy Friday from SAW Habitat!

One of the things I like best about working at a nonprofit organization, after the fact that it is our job to help our neighbors, is that we are required to be non-political. We don't get involved in the electoral process at all.

That said, I spent the day yesterday in Richmond, roaming the halls of the General Assembly Building. I had the opportunity to meet with most of the legislators whose districts overlap with our service area.

The primary reason for our visit was to be sure they were aware of, and to seek their support for, a budget amendment that would allocate $20M to supporting working folks in buying affordable homes. (You can find an information sheet about the amendment here.)

One of the staffers -- who are the unsung heroes of the legislative session, in my opinion -- made a great point that we should be sure to ask our supporters to contact their representatives and ask them to support this (relatively modest) budgetary request. Her suggestion inspired this message today. So, if you have an interest in doing so, you can find information about your state delegate and senator at this website. Enter your address or click on the map to find your Virginia legislators.

It is an accepted fact that legislators are more responsive to issues when they hear directly from their constituents. I encourage you to reach out and let them know your thoughts. I certainly am hoping that affordable housing is an important issue to you, and that you have the time and inclination to make contact via email, the USPS, or even dropping by their offices in Richmond.

All the best,
