Steps Toward Homeownership

Faith, resilience, and community are at the heart of every home we help build at SAW Habitat for Humanity. For Bekky, the path to homeownership was about gaining stability, learning new skills, and regaining confidence.

Overcoming Adversity

Bekky's journey has not been easy. A difficult childhood left her doubting her worth, and years later she endured a double mastectomy while her husband of 21 years left. "I thought I was going to lose my mind," she said. "I did feel that my mother was right, that I was not going to amount to anything."

With the encouragement of friends like Kathy and Robin and the support of the SAW Habitat team, Bekky began to see herself differently. "I am a human. I am okay," she said.

Finding Purpose Through Sweat Equity

When Bekky learned about the 200 hours of sweat equity she would need to complete, she was more than willing to participate. Those hours became a way to contribute to her future home, help others, and give her a new sense of purpose.

Bekky invested more than enough time into volunteering. "I just keep coming up here just to work because I like the people," she said. "They make you feel like you're family."

Building Financial Independence

In addition to working sweat equity hours, Bekky completed eight online financial education courses. These covered topics such as avoiding bankruptcy, understanding loans, and managing personal budgets. "It wasn't easy, but I made it," she said.

With Jill's help, she created a budget that worked for her lifestyle, even allowing her to save money on limited resources. That financial literacy gave Bekky a new sense of empowerment. "The budget gave me confidence, and Jill made me believe in myself," she said.

A New Chapter Begins

Today, Bekky is no longer the woman who doubted her worth. "I have my self-esteem back. I have my pride back. I'm not the person I was told I would be. I was told I'd never amount to anything, and now I am something. I am a homeowner."

Her friends and family are eager to celebrate her moving day, and Bekky is looking forward to welcoming them to her new home.
