The Call That Changes Everything
Faith and community are at the core of everything we do at SAW Habitat. Building homes means partnering with individuals at some of life’s most uncertain moments—and walking alongside them toward stability. Bekky’s journey to homeownership shows how resilience and support come together to transform lives. Bekky’s life changed the day that she received a phone call from Jill, our Programs Director at SAW Habitat.
A True Friend
When Bekky faced health challenges that made steady work difficult and saw her affordable rental home become unaffordable, a longtime friend, Kathy, stepped in to help. Having known her since middle school, she helped guide Bekky through navigating disability applications and Medicaid paperwork and tirelessly searched for safe, affordable housing options. Their search ultimately led them to SAW Habitat for Humanity. After reviewing the program’s criteria, she submitted an application on Bekky’s behalf.
The Day it All Began
The moment Bekky received her phone call to meet Jill, our Programs Director, everything changed. That call brought a mix of disbelief, cautious hope, and, eventually, excitement. “She was just amazed that Habitat was a fit for her. I think that there are parts of her that said, ‘I can't get too excited about this because it might not happen, you know, or maybe I don't deserve this,’” her friend recalled. Unlike a handout, Habitat offered a genuine partnership—an opportunity for Bekky to achieve stable homeownership on her own terms.
Putting in the Work
The journey required dedication. Bekky invested countless hours of sweat equity, working alongside volunteers, contractors, and the SAW Habitat team to build her home. Kathy shared, “Habitat doesn’t make you feel like they're giving you something. They don't make you feel like they're giving you this house. They make you feel like they're helping you achieve your goal. And that's way more important than just being handed something.” Bekky’s affordable mortgage reflects not only financial assistance but also her own hard work and her commitment to paying it forward.
More Than Just a House
Even in the early stages, this experience began to create something deeper than housing. Kathy reflected, “I think this whole process made me realize how important it is to have a community… Even early on, Habitat made her feel seen and supported.” From the initial meeting, Bekky wasn’t treated like a number—she was welcomed as a future homeowner. That sense of being embraced, even before a foundation was poured, marked the beginning of a new kind of security.
Support Similar Journeys
Bekky’s story is a powerful reminder of what’s possible when people come together in support of one another. Every hour volunteered, every skill shared, and every donation made helps build more than just homes—it builds stability, dignity, and lasting hope. Whether you volunteer on a build site, contribute financially, or support our ReStore, we invite you to be part of this mission and make a real, lasting difference with us.
